Ex-Husker Keller suing NCAA, EA sports

Interesting news from Friday's edition of USA Today as former Nebraska and Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller is suing the NCAA and video-game partner EA Sports for their unpaid use of the likenesses of college football players.

According to USA Today: "The class-action antitrust suit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, claims the games make illegal use of football and basketball players' names -- through the download of team rosters -- and unidentified but scarcely hidden likenesses and that the NCAA condones the practice in violation of its own rules."

Keller's lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages for every football and basketball player on an opening-game roster whose jersey number appeared in an EA game, according to USA Today.

What I'm really curious about is the genesis of this lawsuit. From what we knew of Keller during his time here at Nebraska, this move just seems a little curious.

Perhaps the most ironic part of the whole situation is that many of the guys who play college football also love playing EA Sports' college football game -- Husker players talk about it frequently -- and can't wait to see how their likeness is rated.
