Upset? Not even close

LINCOLN -- I have to admit being completely surprised with what transpired Saturday night at Memorial Stadium where top-ranked Southern California beat Nebraska 49-31 in a game that wasn't even as close as the 18-point final margin. While I certainly wasn't convinced that my prediction of a 17-14 win for the Cornhuskers would come to fruition, I fully expected coach Bill Callahan's team to be much more competitive on its home turf.

The most surprising aspect was the way the Trojans were able to just absolutely bulldoze the Blackshirts with their running game. Heisman Trophy candidate John David Booty barely even needed to pass as USC moved the ball on the ground with complete ease. If defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove and his players can't correct that situation in a hurry, it could be a long season in Lincoln.

As it stands, USC was indeed a very good team. Now, the challenge for Nebraska is to see if it can put this loss in the rear view mirror, bounce back and try to put together a good season now that the bubble has burst and expectations have been lowered.

If I was the coaching staff, I would pull the Blackshirts on everyone. What they did or didn't do was a disgrace. We should not be surprised though. In four years have they really had a great defenss under Cosgrove. When Bo Pelini left he took our last great defense. I couldn't believe the running defense or lack of it. This was the biggest surprise of the night. I mean the holes for the running backs were HOW BIG? Heck, I could have run for 10 yards in some of those holes. I guess we have to start calling the Blackshirts the Yellow shirts now, because they were just scared to tackle someone.

I said it then and I'll say it now. The worst thing Steve Petersen has done was to get rid of Bo pelini. Cozgrove has absolutely no idea what a defensive scheme is. If antibody's head should be on the block Cozgroves should be the first!

I see people pilling on the offense and those people are wrong. The defense was the problem. Why did we not adjust at halftime or somewhere in the game. Our linebackers were in the wrong spots and our linemen have no technique. That is almost all coaching. Cosgrove has to go. No ifs, ands or buts. I will say the secondary was OK, but that was because USC didn't have to throw the ball.

The problem runs deeper than defense, offense, or USC. What has transpired is a change in culture for Nebraska football. Steve pefersen was right, he would not let us continue to slide into mediocrity. He stopped the slide by putting us right in the middle of mediocrity now. It is past time to end the silly little experiment with Callahan and CO. Right now we are as good as we will ever be under this staff. Why doesn't any just say the truth. Into year four the best he can do is bring us a second string quitter from a poor team as our leading quarterback? By the way, how is LSU doing and who is it behind that monster of a defense??

Isn't it ironic that USC did exactly to Nebraska, what made Nebraska famous for doing to other teams, RUN RIGHT OVER THEM. No West coast offense can compare to that. In my opinion, this is what we get when we let Steve Pederson sellout our real identity.

You think it was all defensive failure? Guess you weren't watching at the start of the second half with the game still in the balance. Sam Kellar threw up back to back interceptions and gave USC 14 more points. It was all downhill for them at that point.

Didn't we just fire a tenured coach for this and said we wouldn't stand for mediocrity? Guess the standard set when Frank was fired doesn't hold true for Bill and Steve.
