Husker hardball

Now that about everyone in Nebraska finds themselves digging out from one doozey of a March snowstorm, it seems only appropriate to offer a few words about the Cornhuskers' baseball team.

Although NU's two-game mid-week series against Western Illinois has been canceled because of the weather, the Huskers head into this weekend's Big 12 Conference opener against Kansas with a 15-2 record and an 11-game winning streak. Nebraska has climbed to No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll, marking its highest ranking ever from the magazine.

With hurlers like Joba Chamberlain, Johnny Dorn and Brett Jensen returning, everyone figured Nebraska would be solid on the mound. However, the big question seemed to be whether or not coach Mike Anderson's club could score enough runs. So far, the answer has been, "yes."

While there's no replacing a star slugger like Alex Gordon in the lineup, Luke Gorsett has done a pretty good A.G. impersonation by hitting .381 with eight home runs and 17 RBIs. Thrown in Nick Jaros (.389), Bryce Nimmo (.368) and Ryan Wehrle (.367) and it appears -- at least early on -- that a lack of offense won't be a problem for the Huskers.

Now the only question is, can it continue in Big 12 play? Stay tuned.
