Huskers open at No. 22 in coaches' poll
Nebraska will open the season ranked No. 22 in the USA Today coaches' poll.
The poll, which was released Friday morning, has defending national champion Florida No. 1 with 1,466 points and 53 first-place votes. Texas, Oklahoma, Southern California and Alabama round out the top five.
The Cornhuskers, who finished last season unranked in the coaches' poll, earned 236 points. Nebraska was 9-4 in 2008, winning six of its last seven games and capped the season with a 26-21 victory over Clemson on Jan. 1 in the Gator Bowl.
In his poll analysis of the Huskers, USA Today's Jack Carey wrote: "After a bounce-back season that included a win in the Gator Bowl, the Cornhuskers need to settle on a QB, likely from among junior Zac Lee, redshirt freshman Kody Spano and true freshman Cody Green. TE Mike McNeill, OL Jacob Hickman and RB Roy Helu Jr. return to the offense. Defense brings back standout DT Ndamukong Suh and DE Pierre Allen. K Alex Henery also is back.
Nebraska opens its season Sept. 5 against Florida Atlantic at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Virginia Tech, which hosts the Cornhuskers on Sept. 19, is ranked No. 7.
The other Big 12 Conference school ranked was No. 11 Oklahoma State. Kansas (138 points) was at the top of the list of other teams receiving votes and was joined in that category by Texas Tech (114 points), Missouri (44 points) and Colorado (two points).

Dear Terry
On readthg the Independent sports, This past Monday I found out that once again the ABC network is going to do a regional cast on Nebraska, They put in west coast game that is shown to the three west coast states. This has gone on for several years, As a big fan of Nebraska I got real mad at ABC Sports and sent them a real hate letter on behalf of all the many Nebraskans of Oregon California And Washington. There is hudge amount of Nebraskans out here. Boy did I get a fast reply back belittleing my typing wording Said I sure didnt go to the University of Nebraska but if I did they need to improve their standers. My schooling was not of the greatest, was pulled into the service a couple months after turning 18. Then married soon after wars end. also Nebraska was going to loose any way.I never did learn typing. No buddy should care about Nebraska along the west coast. I know that each state has a Nebraska fan club.I put in Postal Service 30 years in Portland.Several years ago a group of Nebraska got togather and got a direct line in from the Nebraska network, Our local station got wind of it and sent a news crew out to interview the party, word was the guys sent them pagking in short order.HATE__HATE__HATE ABC Sports.
