NU's Peterson makes debut as sports columnist
Nebraska senior wide receiver Todd Peterson has earned many different accolades to put on his resume during his college football career with the Cornhuskers. Now he can add another: sports columnist.
Peterson is one of several college football players who have written first-person perspective columns for The Sporting News Today, a new sports publication that’s distributed daily online. Peterson's column: "Life as a Cornhusker just the life for me" was published in Wednesday's edition.
In his column, Peterson explains what it's like to grow up as a Cornhusker football fan in the state of Nebraska. The Central Catholic High School graduate recalled his grade school days back in Grand Island when he and his classmates would have contests predicting the final score of NU football games each week.
"That's when Nebraska was on that incredible run and no one ever played them close," Peterson wrote. "So every week, it was picking scores like 62-7, 56-9, and if you were the closest, you got a piece of candy or got out of homework or something like that."

Media poll pegs Huskers third in the North
While hopes might be higher in the Cornhusker state, media regularly covering the Big 12 Conference have picked Nebraska to finish third in the North Division this season. That's probably a fair assessment considering that NU is coming of a 5-7 campaign and has plenty of confidence to try and rebuild on the defensive side of the football.
Missouri is everyone's choice to win the North Division and face Oklahoma in a repeat of last year's Big 12 championship game. Texas did get two first-place votes in the South.
As for the Huskers, they barely edged Colorado for the No. 3 spot in the North by a two-point margin in the voting. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that this year's NU-CU matchup will be in Lincoln, perhaps giving Nebraska the edge.
In other Big 12 football news, Nebraska running back Marlon Lucky was named to the All-Big 12 preseason team, also voted on by media types. Lucky was the lone Husker named to the squad.
