Huskers return to top 25

On the strength of three consecutive wins to close the season -- two of them on national TV -- Nebraska is back on the map in the college football world, returning to the top 25 at No. 24 in both the Associated Press media poll and the USA Today coaches' poll.

No. 24 may not seem like a big deal to some, but finishing the year in the top 25 not only helps return the Cornhuskers to the national scene, it sets them up to be ranked in the preseason. That seems likely considering the number of front-line players NU returns in 2006.

Being ranked is not only important in regards to having an opportunity to climb the BCS standings and have a chance to be in the BCS mix at the end of the season, but in the amount of publicity the team receives across the country. Being in the top 25 means that every newspaper in the country will have the results of your game each week and the talking heads at ESPN and other networks are much more likely to discuss your team on a weekly basis. Those can obviously be important factors when it comes to recruiting.
